Driving towards the Brasserie on the Bay, part of the impressive Princes Golf Club in Sandwich, you might thing that you’re arriving in another world. As you enter the private estate on which the club and restaurant are situated, you take a long and peaceful drive, with the sea to your right and quiet residential areas to your left. Parking up you enter a square, unassuming building and walk past the bar area into the restaurant itself, which is quiet in the early evening, but soon fills up with exuberant golfers straight from the green, lending a lively atmosphere that makes it ideal for large parties.

The menu gives a choice of three starters, three mains and three desserts, a welcome change from restaurants that seem determined to throw every available dish at a menu in the hopes that something sticks. Our first question to the attentive waitress regards the vegetarian option, a tempting looking bean casserole. What, we ask, does one do if that option is deemed unsuitable? The answer speaks to the intimacy and quality of the restaurant and its owners: the head chef is always on hand to tailor the menu to your needs, although those with specialist diets will find the choices broader if they mention this in advance of their visit.

Satisfied with our available choices for the evening, we place our order and are soon greeted with a delightful amuse-bouche and bread to tide us over while we wait. Starters are mullet for me and venison for my partner, both beautifully presented and just the right size to get our appetites ready for the main.

The main course itself; fillet steak for me, lamb chump for him, is similarly exquisite and again the chef clearly favours quality over quantity, which leaves plenty of room for, frankly, one of the best desserts I have had in some considerable time. A dark chocolate cake with decadently gooey filling is the perfect end to my meal, whilst peach soufflé and ginger ice cream leave my dining companion praising the chef to the heavens!

All in all, the Brasserie on the Bay is a restaurant well deserving of accolade, and very well deserving of a visit.
