Just a stone’s throw from the Fremlin Walk Car Park is the charming family run Nelson’s Bar & Restaurant.   Stepping inside this traditional British Restaurant with its olde worlde charm, my family and I instantly felt at home in front of a roaring large stone open fire.  We enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the bar and could have stayed much longer in the friendly and relaxed company of owners, John and Trisha and their cheerful bar staff.

John and Trisha’s renovation of this 15th Century building has been very sympathetic to its character, preserving all original exposed beams, floor boards and stonework.  Walls have been painted with a light heritage green and the ceilings in off-white for a clean and crisp finish.  The spacious wooden tables and chairs add a rustic touch whilst the leather backed chairs, low lighting and candlelights add warmth and texture. Amy Winehouse and Adele playing quietly in the background completed the relaxed vibe of the dining area.

The Sunday lunch menu consists of a choice of four starters, three roast meats and six deserts.  We chose the thick and creamy cauliflower soup and the chicken liver pate to start and for mains the beef, pork and chicken.  All dishes were perfectly executed; the meats were tasty and tender and accompanied by a good variety of vegetables.  The roast potatoes were particularly excellent and according to my son the crackling was “to die for”.   I have to say it is one of the best roast dinners I’ve had in a very long time and the portions were very generous too.  The desert menu didn’t disappoint either with many classics to choose from we opted for the spotted dick and custard, cheesecake and hot chocolate fudge cake and ice cream.  All were absolutely delicious.

The service was excellent, the staff were friendly and very attentive but managed to retain the same informal and relaxed ambience of the bar making lunch an enjoyable and leisurely affair.  This is an ideal venue for families, groups and couples alike with set menus available on Valentine’s Day, Mothers Day and many other occasions throughout the year. Nelson’s also has a self contained function room upstairs available for private hire and would make an ideal venue for social or corporate gatherings.

Whether you are popping in for a drink at the bar, a quick coffee and sandwich at lunch time or a full blown evening meal you will be made to feel very welcome.  Nelson’s offers beautifully presented traditional and wholesome British food with a modern twist and it will certainly not break the bank with starters and deserts from £4.95 and mains from £7.95.  I would have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending Nelson’s.
