Dating back to the 17th century The Rose & Crown combines the warmth of a traditional Kentish country freehouse with a first-class restaurant. Situated somewhat off the beaten track between the villages of Pluckley, Egerton and Smarden, The Rose & Crown lies in beautiful farmland in the heart of the Weald of Kent - ‘Darling Buds of May’ country.

At this charming free house, traditional ales and wines are offered alongside delicious home-cooked dishes made using seasonal produce sourced from local suppliers.

The menu includes daily specials and a great selection of bar meals for those wanting something lighter, which includes baguettes and paninis, homemade burgers and four egg omelettes.

After having been given a very warm welcome by the owner Dermot and his bar staff, we were shown to our table by our waitress.

The restaurant area itself has a lovely cosy feel with oak tables and comfortable padded chairs giving the place a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

After some deliberation I plumped for the King Prawn Cocktail followed by the Beef & Mushroom Stroganoff and my dining partner chose the Garlic Mixed Mushrooms followed by the Slow Cooked Belly of Pork, all of which was absolutely faultlessly cooked and full of flavour.  With very generous portions it was hard to find room for dessert, but the Mini Terrine Chocolate Fondant just had to be tried, and it really was one of the best I’ve ever had.

With log fires to help warm the colder evenings, and a delightful dining terrace, large beer garden and children’s play area for those warmer days, The Rose & Crown is full of character and atmosphere and I would have no hesitation in recommending it whether  you’re just popping out for a quick drink and a bar snack or whether you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a wholesome, well cooked three-course meal. You will certainly be afforded first class service and a friendly smile from the wonderful staff who make this place an absolute joy to visit.
