Any venue is made infinitely better when the owner of said venue is passionate about both the establishment and its patrons. This is why the Oak, in Charing, is such a delightful place to spend an evening.

The Village itself is pure old world charm, with stunning architecture and a quaint, picture postcard feel. The Oak, situated in the centre of the high street, has long been a favourite haunt for locals and has everything one could want from a small village watering hole. However, when the current owners took over during the summer of 2013, their aim was to put the Oak well and truly on the map and it’s this determination that has helped the pub go from strength to strength over the last few months, securing a coveted Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence along the way.

Entrance to the venue is from one of two doors, the first of which leads from the car park into the cosy little bar, where a crowd of regulars share a drink and a joke with the bar staff. The other is located at the front of the building and leads directly to a staircase, which in turn takes you to the newly refurbished dining area. The dining area is chic and classy; painted with dark colours but light enough to enjoy your meal. Meanwhile downstairs there is additional seating for disabled customers or those who prefer a more traditional pub atmosphere.

The owners’ main intention is to create a venue that offers a great night out to both locals and those from further afield, so whether you want an intimate dinner for two, a family meal, a work’s do or some great live music, you can rely on the Oak to step up to the challenge.

The food itself is, of course, one of the venue’s main draws. Expertly prepared and served with a smile, the menu is brimming over with delicious offerings. Of particular note are the more traditional dishes that grace the main menu, such as fruit crumble, homemade soups and lamb or pork dishes. Indeed if it’s true that you can tell the calibre of a restaurant from the quality of its steak then the Oak deserves all of its accolades and more. However, if you want to sample something more unusual then the daily specials board is definitely worth a look and the Peri Peri Chicken, for example, is a rare delight.

Offering a complete and tailored dining experience to all kinds of guests, the Oak in Charing should definitely be on your list of ‘places to visit’ in 2014.
