Let’s face it, who doesn’t love a barbeque? So I was quite excited to have the chance to experience the first real Smokehouse menu in Kent at The Bull Hotel in Wrotham.

The Smokehouse menu runs alongside the regular a la carte menu and offers a delicious array of burgers, ribs, steaks and slow cooked meat. It’s a festival of high quality meats, cooked over ethically sourced wood and charcoal by 2AA Rosette and Michelin listed chefs.

The kitchen boasts the state-of-the-art Big Green Egg used daily for smoking, slow roasting, hot roasting, grilling and cooking directly the highest quality meat to create mouth-watering dishes. This teamed with a vast list of authentic BBQ side dishes and homemade sauces makes for a real treat for barbeque lovers.

The Bull’s restaurant staff, lead by the talented head chef James Hawkes, have transformed the venue to a destination restaurant with boutique rooms. It is a relaxed and informal place to drink and dine. The decor is a mix of old country charm with a touch of farmhouse. The Bull has retained much of its older charm and the bar area is light and airy with stripped wooden floors, an open fireplace and a welcoming atmosphere.

Both menus feature quality produce from local suppliers and there’s a superb selection of artisan beers and an exciting, well thought out 120-bottle wine list from Kent and around the world; and the owner is only too happy to give advice on the selection to accompany your food choices.

We were served with a selection of dishes from the Smokehouse menu and our sharing platter included the deliciously spicy Fruity Chilli Chicken Wings; my personal favourite - the Smoked Ox Cheek on toast with horseradish and pickled mushrooms; the 10-Hour Smoked Pulled Pork Brioche Bun with apple mustard sauce; the Spicy Beef Banger; the 8 Hour Smoked Brisket Brioche Bun with BBQ sauce and Sauerkraut and the 8-Hour Smoked St Louis Pork Rib. Everything was beautifully cooked; the meat was amazingly tender, and the sides of red and green chilli slaw made perfect accompaniments. The dessert menu is small but shows great flair - the Roasted Chilli Pineapple with Tarragon Lime Sorbet and Grapefruit Jasmine Shot is sublime.

Added to this, the waiting staff were very friendly, polite and courteous, and nothing was too much trouble.
