Situated in the rural outskirts of Kent, Who’d A Thought It is renowned for its quirky decor and superb food.

The menu carried five starters and eight mains, the general theme being British with a friendly nod to our Continental cousins, which to my mind is a good thing, as the size of the establishment’s menu is generally in inverse proportion to the quality of the food. The wine list is comprehensive with 60 Champagnes and 50 wines to choose from.

For starters we were presented with Flaked White Crab Meat, Red Chilli with Compressed Cucumber and Crispy Quails Egg, a light delicate dish with well balanced fresh flavours. At Who’d A Thought It they clearly have an eye for detail.

A hard act to follow, but our main course showed no let-up in quality. The Pan Fried Cod with Curried Mussel and Sweet Potato Veloute was a surprising but inspired combination. The beautifully cooked fish was the epitome of soft, melting succulence. On a personal note I would like to have had some sort of side dish to accompany the fish course, perhaps in the form of carbs.

This was followed by the chef’s personal recommendation of the Raspberry Cheesecake with Foraged Berries and White Chocolate. The creamy sweetness of white chocolate requires a sharp addition if it’s not to be cloy so the berries provided the perfect foil, and the dish was well executed  - not too sweet and not too much vanilla. The plateful slipped down all too quickly, a joyful conclusion to the meal.

The food here is out of this world. Beautifully presented but delicious. All the flavours are well balanced and the ingredients are of good quality.

Make no mistake, the food bowled us over and we can’t wait for the menu to change to see what other clever ideas Chef has up his sleeve. It’s good to see the Kent fine dining scene continuing to develop and expand and especially heartening to have new chefs such as Toby Caira driving things forward by adding their own unique characters to the mix.
